Celebrate the underwater life with the new Caribbean guilder
Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA)The newly designed bills and coins not only showcase the beauty of local marine life, but also cultural landmarks that anchor the identity of both islands. Each new bill will have a marine animal on the front (including the gray angelfish, spotted eagle ray, green sea turtle, stoplight parrotfish, and longsnout seahorse) and a cultural landmark across the back (lighthouse on Klein Curacao, Simpson Bay, Grote Knip Beach, Sint Maarten’s Courthouse, and the Queen Emma Bridge). In addition, a special security feature has been added, which includes a sea sparkle that lights up under special lights.
Unique designs
A first for Curaçao and Sint Maarten, the banknotes have a unique design: the front displays marine life in a traditional horizontal layout, while the reverse showcases local landmarks in a vertical orientation. This innovative approach reflects the forward-thinking spirit of our islands with their deep-rooted commitment to preserving the environment. It was a special opportunity for CARMABI and Sint Maarten Nature Foundation to work together to promote their islands' unique biodiversity on the currency. Both organizations will work to share the stories and natural wonders that inspired these new designs. Both organizations received a donation of 10,000 Antillean guilder from the Central Bank of Curacao and Sint Maarten (CBCS) at the official introduction ceremony.
Raising awareness, inspiring conservation
The introduction of these colorful banknotes offers more than just a way to go shopping. It sparks curiosity and appreciation for the marine species featured on each note. By showcasing the rich biodiversity of the Dutch Caribbean waters, the hope is to inspire more people to learn about these creatures and the need to protect them. These banknotes will help spread the message that marine conservation is essential to the health of our islands’ ecosystems, cultures, and economies.
